History and Spirituality
The Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) was founded as a Christian
denomination in the 17th Century. Its way of worship is based
on silence and the belief that there is 'that of God' in every
person.
Emphasis is placed on the way people lead their everyday lives
and the way they treat other people. Mutual respect and concern
for the natural world and the environment are integral to their
beliefs.
This belief that there is 'that of God' in every person means
that in their attitude to education Quakers try to ensure that:
- Every learner is approached hopefully
- Individuals are encouraged to believe in their own 'immense
potentialities'
- Learning happens most creatively when relationships are based
on mutual respect
- Methods of discipline are based on trust and mutual support
and a desire to promote the positive
- Responsibility is encouraged, as are questioning and exploration,
honesty and openness
